MakeaStar.com: Welcome to the finals. Did you
ever think you would get this far?
Joe K's Kid:
In the first week, we were really happy to be one of the
sixteen songs that we were super excited when we
advanced again.
MAS: What do you think it is about your song that
it has gotten into the finals?
J.K.K.: We're hoping it's because people are
able to relate to the emotion in it and that it is a
song they'd want to hear again.
MAS: Have you been getting any e-mail from Fans?
The Industry?
J.K.K.: YES! we've really been enjoying the
fan mail we've been receiving and appreciate the time
the fans have been taking to say hello and to cheer us
on!
MAS: What is the response to your song and your
sound in general?
J.K.K.: We get a lot of positive feedback from
this song and in general we feel good about the comments
we get about our music being easy to relate to the
lyrics and that's really important to us.
MAS: What do you think about MakeaStar.com's
Industry review service?
J.K.K.: We have always liked getting a variety
of opinions on our music so the reviews at MakeaStar.com
are one of the main features that drew us in to join.
MAS: What about the equal voting power being
given to Fans and the Industry in the contests?
J.K.K.: We are glad that everyone's vote
counts equally in this contest.
MAS: Was getting into the contest your primary
goal or were you more interested in the industry review?
J.K.K.: We pursued the review for the sake of
receiving helpful feedback, so the contest was an added
bonus to that!
MAS: How did you develop your sound? Is there a
primary songwriter? Is it collaborative?
J.K.K.: Justine and Justin have written for a
couple of other LA area bands and they started
developing the JOE K's KID sound as they found that
though they have very different influences from each
other, they share a great love for a couple of artists,
like Jeff Buckley and INXS for instance, and so they
began to explore that common denominator and began to
write JOE K's KID songs.
MAS: Any influences you care to mention? What
have other people compared you to?
J.K.K.: Justine is really influenced by George
Michael, Jeff Buckley, U2 and INXS and Justin is really
influenced by Hendrix, Jeff Buckley and also Justin
loves punk rock. Our sound has been compared to "Blondie
meets Travis".
MAS: What do you think may set you apart from
other Artists in your genre?
J.K.K.: I think it's a combination of our
varied influences blending into our own sound, along
with a non-limiting kind of thinking to our writing. In
other words, we write what we truly feel and somehow it
always ends up sounding like "our sound".
MAS: It’s obvious that your recorded material is
great, how about the your shows?
J.K.K.: Since Justine and Justin have been
onstage together in other bands for several years, it's
really natural for them to bring a chemistry and fun to
JOE K's KID.
MAS: Are you playing anywhere anytime soon?
J.K.K.: We are currently recording like crazy
and plan to do some acoustic shows for the rest of this
year and then we'll be back out in full electric force
in 2005!
MAS: Have you released your music already? If so
how, where and when? If not, do you plan to in the near
future?
J.K.K.: We've had a couple of our original
songs on a compilation CD called Shock Rock that was put
out a few years ago, and we've had some of our music
used in a movie trailer for Miramax and Buena Vista Home
Video and now we are currently working on our first
full-length release - we also did a fun cover version of
The Doors song "HELLO I LOVE YOU" that was released on
Skipping Disc records.
MAS: Where would you like to see your music take
you?
J.K.K.: We want to hear our music all over the
radio stations and we want to play live for thousands
and thousands of people around the world!
MAS: How realistic is that goal in terms of the
immediate future?
J.K.K.: We're working hard to make it a
reality.
MAS: What one band would you like to follow in
the footsteps of down the road to success?
J.K.K.: Actually both U2 and No Doubt come to
mind because they also don't seem to put ridiculous
limits on their bands' sounds and they both have
incredible endurance to overcome a lot that came their
ways.
MAS: Any inspiration behind your band name or was
it pretty much a straight forward thing?
J.K.K.: Joe K was a
real great guy and he really was Justine's dad and one
night when one of the lead singers in a band Justine and
Justin were both in didn't show up for the show, Justine
took over lead vocals on songs she and Justin had
written and they went on with the show, but they needed
a name fast and used JOE K's KID and kept it.
